While my mind wandered, I decided it would be a good idea to make tourism posters for New Orleans. Here's a set I just did. Any suggestions?

I was browsing reddit through the mobile app, when I happened upon an article about a pianist facing seven years in prison for breaching noise pollution laws and causing a woman "severe psychological problems". I clicked to load it, but momentarily stood up to turn off the ceiling fan. When I come back, I find myself staring at this TF2 image. Accidental reddit app shuffle feature strikes again!

Thu, 22 Dec 2011 10:38:00 -0800 If you're thinking of quitting GoDaddy over their support of SOPA, there's a few things you should keep in mind http://edythemighty.posterous.com/if-youre-thinking-of-quitting-godaddy-over-th http://edythemighty.posterous.com/if-youre-thinking-of-quitting-godaddy-over-th

A thread over on reddit clued me in to the fact that GoDaddy supports the passing of SOPA, and has supported similar laws in the past. First of all, GoDaddy owns several other hosting companies, and even offers domain registering services through Google.

Second, if you're serious about switching, be sure to take advantage of transfer discounts. Many domain registrars offer big discounts if you transfer over 50+ domains to them. Namecheap.com offers such discounts. If you're only transferring a few domains, then they have coupons you can use to bring the price down. Try SWITCH2NC to bring the price down.

Here's my affiliate link in case you want me to get a few pennies per each transfer you do.

Sun, 18 Dec 2011 17:25:22 -0800 I just want to have fun with Performous http://edythemighty.posterous.com/i-just-want-to-have-fun http://edythemighty.posterous.com/i-just-want-to-have-fun

So there's this great karaoke/Rock Band clone game called Performous. You should really check it out, it's awesome...when it works. The karaoke part works great, I was able to sing my heart out with my AKG mic connected to my computer through the Shure X2U XLR to USB adapter. Then, I tried to use the Rock Band drums I got off a friend recently. Windows quickly installed the driver:

Drumdevice
Next, I booted up Performous. When you start Performous in Windows, it also pops up a little command line box. In that box, the drums showed up as so:

Commandlinedrums
You'd think everything is peachy, right? Well, while the drums sound off in Practice mode, I can't for the life of me figure out how to use them in the game. Maybe I'm missing something really obvious, but the rather sparse wiki doesn't have a For Dummies section, sadly. Same thing happened in Ubuntu. I just want to drum and sing my heart out. Is that too much to ask?

Mon, 15 Aug 2011 20:51:41 -0700 BBC NEWS: 15-minute daily exercise is 'bare minimum for health' http://edythemighty.posterous.com/bbc-news-15-minute-daily-exercise-is-bare-min http://edythemighty.posterous.com/bbc-news-15-minute-daily-exercise-is-bare-min

Just 15 minutes of exercise a day can boost life expectancy by three years and cut death risk by 14%, research from Taiwan suggests.

Experts in The Lancet say this is the least amount of activity an adult can do to gain any health benefit.

This is about half the quantity currently recommended in the UK.

Meanwhile, work in the British Journal of Sports Medicine suggests a couch potato life with six hours of TV a day cuts lifespan by five years.

The UK government recently updated its exercise advice to have a more flexible approach, recommending adults get 150 minutes of activity a week.

This could be a couple of 10-minute bouts of activity every day or 30-minute exercise sessions, five times a week, for example. ...

Sat, 13 Aug 2011 10:30:00 -0700 Stupid, caring, resourceful dogs http://edythemighty.posterous.com/stupid-caring-resourceful-dogs http://edythemighty.posterous.com/stupid-caring-resourceful-dogs

So we have two gates downstairs to control where the dogs go. There's one for their little space which opens up into the living room kitchen, and there's one that opens up into the front room and stairs. Someone left the one leading up the stairs open. Now usually that means they'll come over and sleep under the beds. This time, Batman jumped over the first gate, walked through the second gate since it was open, saw boxes with my sister's school chocolates in them, and proceeded to take one of the individual boxes of chocolates and try to take it back to Princess, the other dog. But he couldn't jump the gate with the box of chocolates, so he just sat there whining until I found him.

Wed, 27 Jul 2011 21:40:00 -0700 Crazy, Stupid, Love review http://edythemighty.posterous.com/crazy-stupid-love-review http://edythemighty.posterous.com/crazy-stupid-love-review

I just got back from an early screening of Crazy, Stupid, Love and I can honestly say I loved it. I was a bit weary since Steve Carell has been, let's face it, pretty terrible since 40 Year Old Virgin and Little Miss Sunshine. But I have to say I liked it. Carell is still his usually hurt little man, but Ryan Gosling surprisingly works well opposite him. Kevin Bacon is always a joy to see. No man embodies the good looking guy you want to punch more than Kevin Bacon. Emma Stone is sweet, although I would have liked to see more and more of her. The kids? They're all right.

Usually romantic comedies that span several generations feel a bit contrived, as they're all inching towards the fairy tale happy ending with the various generations all happy with their mates. Crazy, Stupid, Love feels like a fresh take on this romantic comedy genre. The detours the couples' relationships takes are as out there as this movie can be without taking it into disgusting low brow territory. This works against the movie at certain points, since there's so much involvement between all the characters at some points, that it can feel like a hot mess, and some things don't get fleshed out very well. But if you don't mind that, the laughs and tears keep coming.

The pacing in the first half often feels a bit off, as we see mostly snatches of the younger couple's relationship be superceded by Carell's drama. Just when Carell's scenes start to drag on a bit too much, we're reintroduced to the younger couple in a funny, sexy and endearing way. The movie works itself fairly well, fairly predictably from this point on but it's still such a joy to watch. The theatre exploded in laughter once the movie reached its climactic point and all the characters met together in a true climax. I can honestly say I've never been that thrilled and laughed so much at a moment in a movie I knew was coming. Maybe that makes me a little low-brow myself, but I had a great time.

Seriously, go see it. I give it a 4/5.

Sat, 23 Jul 2011 22:06:00 -0700 Harry Potter http://edythemighty.posterous.com/harry-potter http://edythemighty.posterous.com/harry-potter

I just saw the last Harry Potter movie. The very last entry in a story that has spanned over a decade, and pretty much encompassed the better part of my childhood. Watching it now, something in me clicked. It’s almost like the true end of my childhood. Daniel, Emma and Rupert are my age!

When I first started watching it way back in the good old days, it didn’t quite click with me that these people were my age. They were and still are just characters in a book’s pages and on the silver screen, But now it’s reached its end. Growing up, Harry Potter was everywhere. Now it’s only in my memories.

I've gotten a deeper understanding of life from a story about witches and wizards than from anything else. It's harrowing, but at the same time kind of liberating. It’s just a story, but it’s our story. I’ll admit I was never that much into it, but it was still an interesting universe that was everywhere. You really couldn’t get away from it. Even in a Catholic school in Puerto Rico, we still read and read these books. That’s as Catholic as you can get outside of an old school Irish Catholic or someone living in the Vatican. Even when so many people came out, even Pope Benedict, you still couldn’t us to stop.

And now it’s all over. But nothing can take away those memories. Except Alzheimers, but hopefully some magic cure will come up soon for that.

Mon, 20 Jun 2011 12:07:00 -0700 Why the philosophical father of libertarianism gave up on the movement he inspired. http://edythemighty.posterous.com/why-the-philosophical-father-of-libertarianis http://edythemighty.posterous.com/why-the-philosophical-father-of-libertarianis

The essence of any utopianism is: Conjure an ideal that makes an impossible demand on reality, then announce that, until the demand is met in full, your ideal can't be fairly evaluated. Attribute any incidental successes to the halfway meeting of the demand, any failure to the halfway still to go.

How could a thinker as brilliant as Nozick stay a party to this? The answer is: He didn't.

I installed the SwiftKey X keyboard, and so far I'm fairly impressed. Takes a little bit of getting used to but overall it works great, even if I switch to espaƱol, simplemente escribe la palabra bien, incluso poniendo la tilde y todo donde debe estar. Awesome keyboard.
